Project: South Hook LNG

Summary

Unit Birwelco were commissioned to undertake a diverse range of engineering and construction activities during the construction of the South Hook LNG terminal at Milford Haven, Europe’s largest LNG terminal.

South Hook LNG terminal has a total processing capacity of 15.6 million tonnes per annum of LNG and is capable of delivering up to 21 billion cubic metres (bcm) per annum of gas into the National Transmission System (NTS), which is equivalent to 20 per cent of total current UK natural gas demand.

Client’s challenge

Phase 1 of the terminal construction, including the construction of three LNG storage tanks by Unit Birwelco, was especially challenging due to the scheduled arrival of price sensitive LNG from Qatar. In addition, due to the number of engineering and construction projects in being undertaken in the UK at the same time, certain types of specialist on-site labour were in short supply.

The role of Unit Birwelco and scope of work

Unit Birwelco played a central role in ensuring the timely delivery of key aspects of phase 1 and was able to augment planned on-site work with a number of innovative off-site pre-fabrication solutions delivered by its Pembroke based specialist engineering unit.

The original contract was worth over £2.5 million and but due to the high level of competence and performance throughout, the original work scope was enlarged with the final contract value exceeding £35 million.

Work scope included:

  • Preassembly of 4,000 tonnes of 9% nickel tank plates using the latest submerged arc welding and pre-assembly techniques
  • Prefabrication and installation of stainless steel pipework
  • Erection of 3,500 tonnes of structural steelwork
  • Manufacture and installation of the gas metering skid
  • Fabrication and installation of the 36” grade x65 47mm wall thickness export pipeline, using a combination of manual STT and automated welding techniques
  • Prefabrication of tension bar assemblies for five tanks
  • Prefabrication of miscellaneous structural steelwork

Unit Birwelco’s site elements of the project incorporated 200,000 direct man hours and work scope was completed within the specified timescales.
