Project Overview

UnitBirwelco’s Storage Tank Division has been appointed as the Principal Contractor for a major storage tank replacement project in East Yorkshire, UK. This project involves replacing two existing carbon steel storage tanks with identical-sized 304L stainless steel tanks: a 3000T tank (21.5m diameter x 10m height) and a 500T tank (7.5m diameter x 13m height). Work began in the summer of 2024, with completion scheduled for May 2025.

Designed in accordance with EN14015 standards, the new tanks feature internal heating coils and full insulation to maintain optimal product temperature. The design, project management, and pre-fabrication are being handled at UnitBirwelco’s South Killingholme facility, ensuring quality control and efficiency. Given the fast-tracked nature of this project, precise scheduling was essential. Demolition of the existing tanks was conducted using mechanized cutting and controlled demolition techniques to ensure safety.

For the 500T tank, construction started in March 2025, incorporating a Bitsand base layer, a low-level ‘D’ sump for improved drainage, and hydraulic jacking to reduce high-altitude work risks. The 3000T tank construction began earlier, in August 2024, using stilts to prevent contamination, a petal segment roof design for hygiene, and high-grade materials for durability. Stringent quality checks, including radiography and welding assessments, ensure compliance with engineering standards.
